Custom Prescription Compounding
Skywalk pharmacists are trained extensively in the art of prescriptions compounding. Patients often require unique prescriptions that are not available commercially. Using the highest grade of pharmaceutical ingredients and applying the latest formulation technologies, prescriptions are custom compounded to meet physician specifications and patient needs. The Skywalk Pharmacy pharmacists are problem solvers. We are proud of our high standards for quality and innovation.
Compounding requires specialized equipment and bulk chemicals that are not available in most pharmacies. Our pharmacists have received extensive training in modern compounding techniques and regularly attend continuing education seminars. We also have a support network that continually generates new ideas and formulations. By combining the ageless art of compounding with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, we can offer practical solutions for our patient’s medication problems.
For example, Skywalk Pharmacy specializes in treating children that have had heart transplants. These children can be as young as one month old when they are discharged from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Some of the medications that are used to prevent the rejection of heart transplants are only available as a capsule or tablet. These dosage forms have two problems for small children. First, the children can't swallow a tablet or capsule at this age, and secondly, the dose is typically way too much for a small child. The pharmacists and technicians at Skywalk Pharmacy routinely compound these medications into liquids that the parent can accurately measure and give to very small children.
We also specialize in compounding:
- Antibiotic gels that dentists use to treat damaged teeth.
- Making tablets and capsules into pleasantly flavored liquid preparations for accurate dosing and easy to administer for children that can't swallow tablets due to dosing or having g-tubes.
- Topical creams and ointments for dermatological ailments.
- Topical pain medications. These can be used to treat injuries with reduced side effects from not having to take the medication orally.
- Custom made capsules that have the exact dose of medication you need, without the added dyes or allergy causing fillers.
- Suppositories for treating nausea and vomiting when you can't take anything orally.
- Nasal sprays for sinus infections.
- Autism medications.
- Ear drops to treat infections.
- Sugar-free preparations.
- Preservative-free preparations.
- Veterinary medications for your pets.
Our compounded medications are produced by trained technicians in our compounding lab. The lab is equipped with specialized equipment, not found in most other pharmacies.
- Reverse osmosis water dispensing equipment to ensure the accurate measurement of filtered water is used in your child's medication.
- Capsule Machine for making customized capsules that do not contain allergy causing fillers.
- Electric Mortar and Pestle for mixing large amount of creams and ointments.
- Ointment Mill for preparing topical medications for pain.
- Highly accurate scale for weighing out ingredients used in compounding. This is attached to a printer that will document that the correct amount of medication was used in making your medication.
- Hot plate/stirrer for mixing and heating medications.
- Biological safety hood for mixing medications and ensuring that no cross-contamination takes place.
- Customized computer program with a listing of our 150 most commonly prescribed compounds. This program contains the "recipe" for compounding the medication, along with a means of documenting exactly how your child's medication was made, so that we can reproduce your child's unique prescription when you need a refill.
- The pharmacy is stocked with raw pharmaceutical grade ingredients used in the preparation of medications obtained from trusted sources.
